What's happened this year so far...?December 2003 November 2003 October 2003 September 2003 August 2003 July 2003 June 2003 May 2003 April 2003 March 2003 February 2003 January 2003 December 2004 November 2004 October 2004 September 2004 August 2004 July 2004 June 2004 May 2004 April 2004 March 2004 February 2004 January 2004 August 2005 July 2005 June 2005 May 2005 April 2005 March 2005 February 2005 January 2005 August 2005Top Of The Morning To Yous... August 2005Just got back from an adventurous week travelling across Ireland... took in the sights in Belfast, Carrick-a-Rede, Giant's Causeway, Dublin, Killarney National Park and finally Cork, supping much Guinness en route, visiting the Bushmills distillery, walking across a scarily high rope bridge over the sea, sniffing out ruins and dodging the (pretty frequent) rain showers. Pretty pretty country and pretty pretty photos! July 2005Ambient, Green and soggyLate July 2005Had a great day at the Ambient Green Picnic, including killer cider, tasty felafel, second hand book shopping and listening to tuneage on the grass... until the near-on torrential rain kicked in Lazy Cow - Late July 2005Loads has happened recently... sorry for being very slack on the updates. Had a nice summery day on the river for P's birthday, followed by a thai meal up at the yummy RumWong. Saw Batman Begins and War of the World. Joined a samba band and now play a very large surdo badly. Lost 11.5lbs so far on a bouncy aerobics and diet frenzy. Almost finished my OU end of course assessment project. Saw Sigur Ros at the lovely Somerset House in London. Had a fantastic time at Guilfest with Helen in the sunshine. Some random pubbing and clubbing... lots of excitement lined up for August, but that's another story. June 2005Musical Month - late May to early June 2005Loads of stuff has happened this month, most notably a shedload of music. First up was the wonderfulHomefires Festival in London which I loved (Adem, Ali Roberts, Amina, James Yorkston, Espers, Scout Niblett etc.), next was Ben Folds & Clem Snide at the Barbican, closely followed by my first foray into african drumming at an interesting drum circle in Godalming. The next evening was Vetiver and M Ward at Hammersmith Lyric, and the week rounded off with Mark Kozelek at the Carling Islington Academy. Not content with all that, I've just spent the weekend with the lovely chaps at Dorset Paeans 'helping' them with their recording (or more likely slowing them down) and laying down string tracks for their respective new albums, driving around Dorset in the sunshine and enjoying more Morris Men per square foot than your average town. Beardtastic. May 2005So much news... to early May 2005Loads to say and not much energy left to type it... this last month I've been down to Somerset for a lovely faux-new-age jaunt with H & K, walked up Glastonbury Tor, stood on ley lines etc, been Breton dancing, sat in on a folk session, learned new poi tricks, been out with the OUSA crowd, seen HitchHikers Guide and many less current DVDs, finally got to Watts Chapel and Loseley House, and have literally just got back from a gorgeous 3 days in Lille, France which was resplendant with tasty brasseries, belgian beer, pretty architecture and an unexpected free zoo!. What next? Recuperation, saving up, more holidays and LOADS of gigs & a few festivals coming up in the next couple of months. April 2005Any excuse... April 2005Saturday started at The Angel in Covent Garden where much Sam Smiths was chugged and next up was The Porterhouse which blew me away with it's many alcoves, bars and humungous choice. Sipped some Youngs Double Chocolate (my favourite wonderful Christmas drink) and later was recommended Chocolate Truffle Ale and marvelled at its scrumptiousness. We later all moved on to Masala Zone in Soho for a very strange white korma and some good ol' Cobra, then rather foolhardishly (!?) finished the night off with a late night Stella at the Intrepid Fox, Soho - a noisy goth pub of eyelinered proportions. Beers in Belgium - Early April 2005Friday involved a day-trip to Brussels on the Eurostar, and the consumption of much Kriek, Chimay, Lindemans Framboise and Charles Quint amidst the pretty buildings, churches, public gardens and frankly dire weather. Lunch was a scrumbly Italian at 'Venezia' and we later moved onto the 'Petit Paon' bar. Photos here. ...and Dirigibles! - April 2005Went to a fantastic gig last night at the Queen Elizabeth Hall on the South Bank. Six Organs of Admittance, White Magic, Alasdair Roberts _and_ Joanna Newsom all on the same bill. Joanna and Alasdair were awesome, Six Organs were good to hear for the first time, but I wasn't sure about White Magic - kind of went on a bit. Still, we were treated to a load of new Joanna material and I can't wait for a follow-up to Milk Eyed Mender. A few blurry snaps here March 2005Exploring - March 2005I don't do the religious part of Easter. However, I do join the UK hoardes in using it as an excuse to drive around, clogging up the roads. Courtesy of my wonderful Dad, I'm back on the highway and have been exploring Witley Nature Reserve and Painshill this weekend. Both places of much beauty. Whoo. Folk, beer and good cheer etc.- March 2004Far too long since a site update, sorry peeps. This March I've been to a couple of great gigs - first up, the long-awaited return of Slint at the London Forum, closely followed by Sharon Shannon and Eliza Carthy at the Queen Elizabeth Hall. I've also endured coursework headaches trying to get a tedious essay in on time and hoping it's up to the grade. Never before have I had to write something I've felt so unqualified to write. Explored Whitmoor Common a few weeks back, hence some new snaps in the photos section. This weekend just gone was spent in lovely Dorset with Mike of Dorset Paeans sampling beer, more beer and then some. February 2005Gigs and Walls - Mid February 2005So, this month I've been mostly doing coursework for the second year of my part-time masters. I'm finding all the reading quite hard going, but once this essay is out of the way it should ease up a bit. I've also been working on a website for Jess who's publishing her poetry later this year, and have also been watching (aka perving) P and friends climbing at Craggy Island quite a few times. I'm going to have a go quite soon, just working up the guts. Also, last night we went to the Royal Festival Hall to see Low, Kid Dakota and the London Dirthole Collective. Great night out, with a few blurry snaps here Rugby a Londres - Early February 2005This weekend I popped up to London to meet up with Jen, Iain and lots of other lovely people. We joined them at the Walkabout Inn at Temple for the Scotland vs France rugby game. The pub was busy and we put a couple of drinks away, so decided to stay on for the Wales vs England match. I'm not a huge fan of the sport, but always feel torn when those two teams play - I'm English, but half my family live in Wales, so I put my bets (thankfully) on Wales, and big yays to them for winning. The pub was far too crammed (as in, painfully 'can't move!' crammed) during the game, with enormous bar queues, so afterwards we all trudged on to the most wonderful quiet 'old man' pub, the Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese in Fleet Street - a lovely Olde Worlde place with fantastic Sam Smith's Nut Brown Ale and smoked salmon 'rustic platters'. Too much beer, but lots of good chatter. Feeling a teeny bit under the weather today and still wondering how to conquer my first OU assignment of the year 'The usefulness of the developmental niche'. Nice. Not. January 2005More Partying - end of January 2005January has been a very very long skint month! Recent outings have included a meal at Old Orleans with the Students' Association and a night on the tiles yesterday, visiting the Slime, RSVP and later the rather busy Carlton for drinks, but alas no dancing. Looking forward to pay day immensely. Quick Update - Mid January 2005Emerged from skintness to go and watch 'Closer' last night. A very good film in my humble opinion. Have also been practising my poi-spinning ready for the April '05 Glastonbury jaunt (watch out ladies!) and creating a website for the esteemed Dorset Paeans. Go buy a cd now. Returning from Website NeglectAfter an extended period of website updating neglect, I'm back and pleased to announce that Christmas was pretty good. Obviously it involved eating and drinking far too much, but I also sneaked in a weekend in Wales, quite a lot of shopping, some Xmas eve drinks with friends, lots of comedy DVDs and a couple of books. Santa was kind and provided me with the means to go and buy myself a shiny new SLR camera, in order to take better snaps, and thus have a better website (hmm?). Also splurged in the sales and have some new adidas at long last, the old pair could walk away by themselves. So, Xmas was good, Christmas lunch wasn't too disastrous (except never ever buy Iceland stuffing), and all the pressies were lovely. Thank you everyone! December 2004Lucy is SlackDue to non-being arsedness, nothing appears to have happened to me this month. I lie, obviously. November 2004Feeling festive yet? - Late November 2004Tonight we went to the annual christmas lights 'ceremony'. This includes the local radio DJ waffling loudly over a PA, introducing a degraded council worker in a rubber suit dressed as a dog, before dragging out this years panto star (Britt Ekland, and her handbag pooch 'Tequila'), enduring a speech from the mayor, before doing an embarassing mexican wave up and down the high street, counting from 10-1, then going "whoo" as the disappointing lights slowly kick into action. Actually, a pretty good firework display ensued, then we went out for a curry and a few drinks so it was quite a good night really - dodgy snaps here A much needed update... - Mid November 2004Long time, no type. This month, I have been mostly taking a scenic voyage to Oslo, Norway. I have enough to say about to fill an entire page, so to keep it short and sweet here, I will say that it was a pretty, chilly, clean, friendly, really nice place and I'd love to go back and explore further, perhaps in Bergen or further North. Some snaps are here for your perusal. Since I've been back, I've mostly been staying in to try and save some cash (Norwegian beer is cripplingly expensive), but this weekend I journied to Ealing for drinks in the Red Lion and gorgeous tapas at La Siesta with P and Lawrence. October2004More Partying - Mid OctoberIt's been a sociable couple of weeks, and this weekend just gone was no different. Pub with friends on Friday, two separate shopping trips, a dancetastic party and sitting in the garden til all hours on Saturday, then a different shopping trip and pub lunch on Sunday followed by not nearly enough snoozing. This coming weekend? More party. Whoo! September 2004Birthdays and Festivals - Mid September 2004Well, it's my birthday week and I've had a great time. Lots and lots of birthday shopping on my day off, followed by a gorgeous meal at Olivetto's. On Thursday I went to the all new 'Spoons for dinner, then on Friday a load of people came down to the Five and Lime for drinks then a spot of clubbing at Time. Saturday 18th was the HomeFires Festival at the Conway Hall in London - saw Adem, The Memory Band, Juana Molina, Micah P. Hinson, Beth Orton and Bert Jansch in a lovely laid back atmosphere. Fantastic week :-) Snaps here Heritage Weekend - Early September 2004This weekend is designated Heritage Weekend around here, so much enjoyment was had exploring historic buildings, the joys of morris dancing, local towers and castles and taking lots and lots of snaps. See these Heritage Snaps Yet more partying -Early September 2004The last few weeks have been equally busy and sociable, with a night at the Keystone, friends coming down from London for some food etc., a foray into Barzuka, a wander into the Five and Lime after work, lots of DVDs and a friend of a friend's birthday last Friday, necessitating red outfits, devil horns, penis-shaped straws and dares all round. Have also been doing some pre-birthday presents-for-me shopping and am the proud owner of some new books, cds and a DVD or two. Yay. Work's getting busy though - I think there will be a few less nights out over the next week (my birthday excluded!) August 2004God I'm knackered - Late August 2004After a very partydelic weekend just gone, with much birthday celebrating, I carried on in true trooper style, going out with the girls from work on Monday night at Ha Ha's. Wednesday was Guildford OUSA's monthly night out, and despite the team having a gorgeous scribe (grin) we managed to come third from last. That means that unless the questions got harder, our studies have made us about 10 times thicker since last time we went along. Finally, I went to Wagamama japanese restaurant last night with Alli, Sonia and Rosie. For food that sounded dubious it was very very tasty. Hungover, but having fun - Late August 2004Since my last update, I have been mostly experiencing computer trauma with broken hard-drives, and more recently computer joy as my fsck off enormous hard-drive based MP3 player arrived courtesy of iRiver. I'm greatly enjoying listening to all my music on random play. Other fun over the last few weeks includes: photography visit to Waverley Abbey, a gorgeous Cistertian abbey in dramatic ruins... trips to the Tup, Wetherspoons etc... goodbye drinks with Cecile, Cedric et al of Guildfordians, a new mobile phone which does all manner of clever party tricks, a very messy night at the Five and Lime to celebrate Jess's birthday and a sunny Saturday picnic in the park followed by hiring rowing boats and pissing about on the river. Last night we took on the Weyside, the White House then stampeded into the Rose Valley for a curry. I had no idea that some restaurants stay open so late - I think I got home about oneish! Sooo snoozy... August antics - Earlyish August 2004August commenced with a visit to Norwich where much exploring, wine drinking, photo taking, meeting relatives and driving around the pretty countryside happened. Next was the Electric Theatre film festival where I saw Cold Mountain which is a gorgeous Anthony Minghella film on a par with one of my all time favourites, the English Patient. Other things happened, such as joining the local gym and finding out quite how far I can't row, and work giving me a pay rise which was fantaaaastic news. Yesterday was the Blue Square Shergar Cup at Ascot Racecourse so I enjoyed lots of horses, beer, frilly frocks then a free concert by Tyler James and the Sugababes. I was quite amused at the sheer lack of places to go afterwards though - Ascot looks like a bit of a one horse town!Pix here July 2004Welsh Adventure - Late July 2004For the last few days we ventured to the Land of Our Fathers for a flying visit. Much good food was consumed, particularly at the Owain Glyndwr in Cardiff, and the new Oscar's Brasserie and Grill in town, and the Walkabout Inn provided a welcome leather sofa at the end of the day. The seaside was explored, although it was rather windy down at the coast, and we troubled a sheep or two for good measure. Lots of books came home with us, courtesy of the very highly-stocked second hand attic store in town, and this morning I'm repacking my case for another adventure... more news and photos soon! More parties and car joy - Late July 2004It's been a slow and yet busy week... Last Wednesday I was arm-twisted into joining a gym so I've been there a few times over the last ten days or so. I went to a party at C&C's flat on Friday Night where much cider was consumed, and some scrummy tapas was eaten aplenty. Didn't feel so hot on Saturday though, so spent a lazy weekend lounging mostly. Monday was a day's annual leave (yes, holiday time) taken to do my next piece of coursework which is due in soon, and the rest of the week has been pretty quiet as I'm exceptionally skintio this month. Not helped by the dreaded MOT. Sitting in the waiting room must be like watching your child go for a CAT Scan or something. Fortunately my child, or car, is working perfectly well, so I walked away the proud mother. Hoorah Busy bunny in pickled weekend shocker! - Early July 2004It's been a busy week this week, with work taking me to a local music school and art college, and the social life taking me out on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. I've been frequenting the Keystone and Five and Lime, attending Shalford Prom in the Park (pics here) and watching Shrek 2, which is fab :-) Shame it rained so much this weekend though - the prom was a rather soggy affair! June 2004Parties, seascapades, meals and comedy - Late June 2004To condense a busy week into a few sentences, the header says it all. Went to a party at Cecile & Cedric's on Friday and ate much BBQ stuff whilst chatting in pigeon French to a range of people from England, France, Italy and Spain. A good time and much wine was had by all, but alas (for those who cared) France lost the football. Barry Harry Gary Potter Trotter - Mid June 2004It's been a good week so far with a nice meal out with ex-colleagues, involving some good wine (the waiter said the house white was vinegar at Pizza Express, be warned) and yummy pizza, and last night after a late meeting we saw Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban which was fab. I want a hippogriff to help me dodge the town traffic in the mornings! Sunny Runnings - Earlyish June 2004Just had a busy weekend, spending Friday night out and about in the great alehouses of town. On Saturday we went to Cambridge to explore, sit in a small pub and watch bicycles go by, and later for a BBQ on Jesus Green. Unfortunately the rather changeable weather conspired against us, so the 20+ participants upped and packed their blankets, food and beers and decamped to James' flat for a bit of a house party instead. Got home v. late, and was up again at 6am on Sunday as I'd volunteered to be a key volunteer at the Race for Life. After helping to assemble the start and finish area, putting up all the branding and starting the race clock, I sat back with the finish line tape, to wait for the first bonkers lady to run back through it again. With 3500 participants, we were waiting over an hour for the entire lot to pass the finish line, but a good day was had in the sun - of course followed by some sumptuous Sunday lunch at the Stoke. Yum. I do like to be beside the seaside... - Early June 2004Had a great weekend adventuring by the coast. We explored the shopping 'delights' of Portsmouth town centre, then later investigated the historic dockyard where the HMS Victory, HMS Warrior and the Mary Rose now live. After some traditional seaside chips, we perused the range of shops on offer at Gunwharf Keys and took great delight in the Cadbury's factory outlet complete with model train. As evening drew in and the sun began setting across the sea, we collapsed on a leather sofa at Ha Ha's and watched the world, and the cross channel ferries go by. Later we sampled some fantastic tapas and San Miguel at La Tasca before ending the evening at Tallulah's. A well timed call to Network Rail Enquiries informed us that the last train home was in 20 minutes, so unfortunately we didn't make it as far as the Jongleurs comedy club next door, but there's always a next time. My verdict? Portsmouth town is a bit grim, but Portsmouth Harbour is great and very reminiscent of Cardiff Bay. Not so sure about the half-finished Spinnaker Tower they are building, but I certainly wouldn't complain about making a return visit to watch the progress. Oh, I do like to be beside the seaside, beside the seaside, beside the sea. May 2004I love Bank Holiday Weekends! - End of May 2004So far this weekend, we've had long lie-ins, a nice walk along the South Bank, lunch in the Black Friar, wonderful BBQ food and lots of chatter at a party near Clapham Common, much excessive gardening, newspapers, lovely nibbles etc. and that was with a day still left to spare! On Monday, P and I also went to the Tate Modern for drinks and a wander around the 'art' with Laurence and Jennifer, and ended up in the Centre Page down KnightRider Street (what a name!). Some nice thai food later and we were toddling back to the ranch, to watch Derren Brown whilst being both cynical and sarcastic. Phew - End of May 2004I'm so glad it's the end of the week! It's been a busy one this week with two breakfast meetings at ungodly hours and OUSA meetings, yoga classes, Borough council community consultations, pub quizzes and meeting up with Ian and Nick giving me plenty to do in the evenings. Tonight I shall rest. Phew! Bring on Friends and Big Brother, some nice dins and some vino and a hopefully sunny bank holiday weekend for outdoor frolics. Holiday snaps ahoy - Late May 2004The holiday snaps are all back from the printers and are here for your delight... or not. Your days are numbered Dracu-la-muhahahahahaha - 20 May 2004Went to see Van Helsing last night, which was 2.5 hours of non-stop fighting, expolosions, bodice-ripping, crossbow-wielding fun. Yay! Holidays in Croatia - May 2004I could write a whole page about Croatia, and maybe when I have more time I actually will. As it is, I will simply write that it was a brilliant week and that Croatia is a very beautiful part of the world. We stayed in Dubrovnik and enjoyed touring the old town and its churches, palaces and winding stairways, and also explored the Gruz harbour, Lapad peninsula and took an eventful coach trip along the coast of Dalmatia, overlooking the archipelagos from the clifftop road. Halfway to our end destination, the coach broke down, leaving us stranded in a dirt-tracked car park in rural Bosnia Herzegovina. Fortunately another coach was located fairly rapidly, and we made it to Mostar to visit a Turkish house, mosque and enjoy a 3-course lunch close to what had been the frontline in the 1990's conflict. Despite some very powerful lightening storms, which were most dramatic from our top-floor balcony at the hotel, we did have some glorious sunshine which made the whiteness of the old town quite blindingly bright. The one thing that made me sad about Croatia was the number of stray ill-looking cats left to wander the streets... if I was a vet, I'd found DubrovnikAid and get out there for some humanicatitarian aid. More on Croatia when my photos turn up!!! Wandering in the countryside - 15 May 2004Took a road trip/photography day out today around the windy surrey countryside roads, stopping at Clandon House, Leith Hill Tower and the Wooton Hatch. Later on I managed to miss the Eurovision Song Contest in favour of a pint or two at the George Abbott, followed by a swift trip to the chippy. Enjoying the summershine - Mid May 2004Met Alli for a business meeting on Friday, which happened to take place in the sunshine, then spent a lazy Sunday afternoon in Bar Med with Mireia and Alida. I love this sunny summery weather - there's an excuse to go out every five minutes, everyone's much happier than when it rains, and beer tastes so good when the sun is shining! Films, lunches, more films - May 2004No updates here recently as I've been on holiday, but now I'm back! Over the last few weeks I've been to see Shaun of the Dead with P, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind with P and Alida. Both films were pretty good, with the latter being a bit of a confusing headstrain, but it touched me, so it gets the thumbs up. April 2004Hrmphhh! Late April 2004A certain clothes company I have been known to spend large amounts with have this week come up with an online questionnaire whereby they can interpret your answers into a virtual model of yourself. Apparently this is me! Dining with students - Late April 2004Tonight was the April OUSA meeting, this month being a meal at the Seahorse in Shalford. Admittedly, I shouldn't have gone for the rock solid sausages as the chicken pie looked a lot better, but I hope everyone enjoyed the meal and had a good time. There are some photos here for good measure! Well, not really - Late April 2004Dastardly essay of doom is nearly finished. Spent yesterday at the Aimhigher Surrey Consultation Conference at Royah Holloway, and took the lunchtime opportunity of getting some snapshots of the beautiful Founder's hall - you can see them here. Also, P got some photos back - finally an image that captures the essence of me! OUSA Conference 2004 - 16-18 April 04I spent this weekend at the Walton Hall Open University campus in Milton Keynes for my first OUSA conference. My preconceptions were smashed when the weekend turned out to be not just 'okay', but actually quite entertaining and interesting. It was very similar to the two NUS conferences I attended, in that motions were debated and passed etc, hustings and elections went on, and we emerged with an amended constitution and a new executive and leadership. It was great to meet other branch officers from region 13, and a big thanks to Scott, Chris, Cheryl and Julie for making us welcome. The evening entertainment was okay the first night, and even saw our regional group get up there to torture the masses with our karaoke renditions of 'Love Shack' and 'Reach for the Stars' (a student favourite from my sabbatical year). Shame about the Saturday night Spoondogs who were without doubt shite. Photos from the weekend are here. Bring on OUSA Conference 2005 in Eastbourne. Tsk Tsk - Mid April 2004Have any of you read the line up for Guilfest 2004 yet? I certainly hope I'm working it and not paying to get in because so far they have Blondie, Ocean Colour Scene, Katie Melua, Stranglers, UB40 and Simple Minds. Sounds like a 'top' line-up from 15/20 years ago. At least they are redeemed for an hour by a crusty set from the Levellers. At least you can see why Radio 2 sponsor it! Meeting the Guildfordians - 13 April 2004I've been a member of the Guildfordians online community since October and last night, 6 months later, some of us finally met up. Good to meet you Alida, Mireia, Cecile and Cedric!!! Look forward to more of the same soon :-) Tum te tum tum... - Early April 2004Last night I went to Peter's Palace in Woking with some old work chums. I'd always thought that Chinese food wasn't so filling and was very moreish. It was certainly moreish, but for an all you can eat buffet I only managed two trips. Having said that, it may have been due to learning to use chopsticks and my munching taking me somewhat longer than usual. Good night :-) Fun Packed Weekends!! - Early April 2004The weekend got off to a good start when I received my first masters level essay back from my tutor with a whopping 93% mark on it. Hoorah. In true celebratory style we went to The Water Rats Theatre in King's Cross to see Charlie Parr, Carla Bozulich and the Black Eyed Snakes (Alan Sparhawk from Low's other band). To be honest, we heard but didn't see the first two bands, but stood stageside for the very rocking Snakes gig. The album is being mail ordered as we speak. March 2004Reunited in Style - Late March 2004This weekend was a selective reunion for friends from Cowbridge School. Some of us stayed in The Bear, which was quite swanky - especially using the members bar for lock-ins after all the pubs had shut! Anyway, it was one of the best weekends I've had in aaaages and it was fantastic to see Helen, Kerry, Matt, Tom, Ol, Keira, Celia, Hayley, Emily, Emma, Andrea, Vicky et al. Cowbridge looks very small these days and walks which previously took hours seemed to pass in minutes, with the exception of scaling Mount Ida which hurt :-) Freakishly, a strange incident took place with Helen's mobile phone being lost in a field and found by other members of the group. Similarly, through the power of inaccurate maps and tin whistles, the 1995 time capsule was located and its contents provoked more giggling than I've indulged in in quite a while. Viva Birds, the Duke, Oggie custard slices and the Groom toilets. Today a new slam book commences to capture the essence of 2004. Next year, we reconvene for another weekend of fun and a ceremonial burial of a 2005 time capsule, ten years on. Thank you everyone for such a good time :-) Photos are here Last night I dreamed I went to... - 24 March 2004...the Electric Theatre again (not Manderley this time). We went over there tonight to watch the Guildbury Players perform Daphne Du Maurier's Rebecca. A few fluffed lines and just the one set didn't hamper enjoyment, although having read 3 novels about Mrs De Winter I couldn't help but find the gaps. It was very well done though and was most enjoyable. Not to say that if I met Mrs De Winter, I wouldn't find her annoying, simpering and naive... "You killed your first wife? Please let me support you Maxim...I beg of you!" If she carried on like that, I'd probably put her at the bottom of the ocean along with the last one :-) Bowling, films and stuff - End February 2004Last night was the Guildford OUSA bash for the month (Photos here). 10 of us went down to Guildford Spectrum and did a spot of 10-pin bowling. I haven't played in about 4 years, and was surprisingly good at my first game, then alarmingly bad after a beer or two when the second game got going. Sheila and Carol were by far the best, and I think I should stick to my talent of propping up the bar. Also, I saw Starsky and Hutch last weekend which is v funny. Go see it. Miss A kicks Arse - 19 March 2004I just found out that I passed last Autumn's Open University course TT280: Web design, development and management with 82% giving me a DISTINCTION!! Read it and weep! Yay. Excited Yayings! - March 2004Had a good weekend so far, with some shopping, an afternoon's worth of supping ale in SpetherWoons TM, a rather cool hailstorm, watching 'A League of Extraordinary Gentlemen' and most excitingly, booking a holiday to Croatia. Needless to say, I went out and bought the guidebook and am dribbling at the pretty pictures :-) Dydd Gwyl Dewi hapus - 2 Mar 04Last night I made a valiant effort at cooking welshcakes to celebrate Saint David's Day. Alas, the recipe I had was crap, the mixture wouldn't stick together, I added some more egg and they ended up a bit like mini-raisin pancakes which P thought were "gagsome". I won't be bothering next year. I'll be celebrating through rejoicing in Welsh Beer instead February 2004More of my usual... End of February 2004This weekend we went out for a lovely meal at Old Orleans, visited a very busy pub and watched Sin Eater, which was entertaining (Heath Ledger in full priestly glory), if not a little bit shallow in terms of skimming over lots of plot detail. Today I've been trying to write my essay and ended up scouring the textbooks for _ages_ because I knew which quote I wanted to use but couldn't remember which paper it was from. Gah. Need a cunning system. Universally Challenged - End of February 2004Last night was the monthly Guildford OUSA meeting, this time incorporating a pub quiz at the George Abbot in town. 11 people came along and we made up 2 quiz teams. Our team 'Universally Challenged' came third - narrowly missing out on silly amounts of chocolate, which is a shame, but probably good for my 'waistline'. I had a good night and I hope everyone else did too!? Next month.... bowling! (Has anyone got a hard hat? I'm sure I could be quite dangerous with a bowling ball given my supreme sporting skills and co-ordination). Yo Ho Ho and a bottle of rum! - End February 2004A moderately quiet weekend just passed, involving a little clothes shopping, a few pints courtesy of the Star, a small amount of work on my current essay (a thrilling critical analysis of European Commission and DfES lifelong learning policy nonetheless) then much enjoyment watching 'Pirates of the Carribean'. Good film! Tonight I shall be mostly burning pancakes then resorting to eating the fillings from their respective jars (hmm, chocolate spread) whilst looking sheepish and cursing Delia Smith, and tomorrow night is OUSA night. Anyone who's not received detail about where and when to meet should get in touch ASAP (email guildfordousa@yahoo.co.uk) Mooing, swings, cookies... - Mid Feb 2004A busy few days involving accompanying a local group on a playground tour of the local area, playing and evaluating the fun and safety levels of equipment and munching on choccy biscuits. I've also made some draft designs for t-shirts for the school reunion. If anyone wants one, let me know! Valentines Weekend - 14-15 February 2004Went to a Open University tutorial on Saturday, which involved leaving home just before 8, taking three trains, talking for 2 hours, then taking another a three trains home, arriving 6 hours after I set off. *Phew*. We cooked up a Valentine's feast on Saturday night, which tasted fantastic but made me veryvery full, then on Sunday we ventured into town for some pubgrub, then on to a comedy club to see Boothby Graffoe who was most amusing. Happy Valentine's day to P. Love you :-x Last night I aimed higher... 12 Feb 04Last night the Opportunities Fair in Godalming that I have been organising took place. We were fortunate to get a mention on the front page of the Surrey Advertiser and I did a cringeworthy interview at 96.4 The Eagle, which went out on the midday and 1pm news. The event was lively, busy and very overcatered so everyone at the community centre will be eating sandwiches for the next week. We attracted local residents and approximately 25 stalls from local educational and recreational organisations who offered advice, freebies and information about new opportunities in the area. Photos available here Let's Rrrrrrrockkk! - 7 February 2004Went to see School of Rock last night, which made me laugh quite a lot. Visited a couple of houses of the public variety this evening, and was also happy to see that OUSA delivered my branch newsletter to my door at last. Snuffle snuffle - Early February 2004What a stinky cold I have! How nasty the weather is at the moment! At least I can take great comfort in starting my new course this week (not). The tutorials are even in East Grinstead, the most inconvenient place they could have possibly picked. Fnar. Anyway, am getting all geared up for a school reunion in March - the hotel is booked, the railcard is at the ready.. bring it on :-) January 2004Guildford OUSA 2 - The Revenge - 26 January 2004Tonight Guildford OUSA held their second meeting, this time at the Refectory in Milford. After some rather nice carvery fare and ice cream and giggling at mindless bureaucracy, we discussed events through until September and elected Martin and Becky onto the committee. Coming soon will be an all-new unofficial website with details of events, piccies, helpful hints etc. For the meantime, get onto Firstclass and find us in the regional and local conferences! Happy birthdays and health warnings - 24 January 2004Went to Old Orleans last night to wish Emma a happy birthday and meet up with some friends. Much drinking ensued, to the great displeasure of my stomach later, but fun was had by all. A little health warning though - pints, black sambuca and flaming lamborghinis don't mix. Blargh. Sanitized by Swisher - End January 2004Went on a recce last night, trying out a local pub quiz that I intend organising an Open University Students Association team for in February. My trusty companion, P, joined me and together we put our collective brainpower into the 40 questions. After finding out that football was the bonus round we could have got our coats, but no, we stayed firm and determined, then proceeded to get questions about native languages, ducks, dance music, dogs noses and the channel islands wrong. If there's one consolation, we weren't the worst scoring team in the pub, but if you take off the 2 points the sympathetic quizmaster gave us for neatness, I think we might just have been outright losers. Whoops Doing groundwork has never been so enjoyable - 14 Jan 04Little did I know when I became Guildford OUSA secretary that the research would be so pleasurable. Spent this evening sizing up the venue for our forthcoming branch meeting (26/1/04), by sampling their fine carvery and apple pie, and looking longingly at the beer pumps (damn car). We had a good planning meeting of the rather small OUSA committee and have come up with a provisional events schedule for the Spring. We also spoke to 'Da Management' of the venue who have made us an almost unrefusable offer of a free meeting room, and a 2 course meal for £6.95 (2 course would normally be between £10.50-£12.00) so long as we order before 7pm. All Guildford OUSA members should have had an email from the mailing list by now, but if not, get in touch as we need numbers ASAP for booking. Some recommendations - Mid January 2004After doing all things festive, January always calls for a tidy-up and clear-out, so I have been selling my soul on ebay (not literally) to fund my tuition fees for my next Open University course. It's quite amazing that things I think should be destined for the bin seem worth quite a bit to others?! Neglecting my online duty... - Early January 2004I feel I must apologise for managing not to write anything for several weeks. Christmas was quiet but a fab break, with pub outings aplenty, several cinema trips (LOTR: Return of the King and Love Actually are must-sees) and culinary genius to rival Nigella. Managed to create a Christmas lunch par excellence without burning, igniting or undercooking anything, which must deserve a round of applause? December 2003This calls for a celebration - 17 December 2003Several bits of news today... it was a cold frosty morning with ice on the pavements and car windows, crisp frosty grass and blazing sun shining low in the sky, so I felt I had to take some photos. Secondly, I found out this morning that I passed my first Open University course, T171, with a rather respectable 84.03%. So, that's 30 CATS points towards another degree, or half a Cert IT, depending upon how you see it. I'm happy though :-) Scrumblies - 15 December 2003Enjoyed a rather tasty Christmas meal with all my colleagues at Hugo's in Woking, then endured public transport hell trying to get to my afternoon meeting. It's just as well I only had a shandy or two because the train I'd intended to catch was supposed to be 40 minutes late, which meant that I would have been about half an hour late for the meeting. In the end I had to ditch that idea, get a train home, jump in the car and map read en route, arriving 10 minutes late, but getting there way before public transport could have. And to think they bang on about promoting alternative forms of transport in the local community plan. I would happily oblige them if they could just make it reliable. Elves, pixies, fairies and shopping - Mid December 2003A good Christmassy weekend, commencing with some fine beverages in the Star, and also including some festive shopping around the very busy streets of town and watching the very silly but amusing film, Elf, (reviewed as "another John Hughes wannabe cuddle bunny of a movie" with a "script is aimed at six-year-olds"). Oh dear, I enjoyed it. On the downside, did some baking which didn't go quite to plan, I tried to make some arty decorations out of oranges and burned them, and I also had to write half of my Open University TT280 ECA. Still, that means I've only got 1500 words to do this week, then I'm properly on holiday :-) Snip Snip - 9 Dec 03Today I thought it would be a wise move to ask our lovely local hairdressers to cut all my hair off. I don't know quite what came over me, but I now have a strange resemblance to a German librarian. It's a very funny feeling having such a light head and no split ends to play with incessantly. Anyway, it makes a change, and hair grows back, doesn't it :-) Keeping up with the gossip - 8 December 2003Took an evening off thinking about the end of course assessment for my O.U. course which is rapidly creeping up on me and instead spent a lovely evening at Pizza Express with the girlies. Allison, Sonia, Rosie and I munched some assorted garlic bits, pizza and some rather scrumptious ice cream whilst catching up on the goss. Yay for Christmas as an excuse to meet up and eat things :-) Duly elected... - 3 December 2003Went out this evening to a regeneration meeting of the Guildford branch of the Open University Students' Association. Turnout was more than expected, with 9-10 people there, but this was impressive only _before_ the regional officer told us that there are actually 1800 students in the catchment area. Anyway, it was really good to put names to faces after using electronic conferences for the last year. I have been elected as branch secretary so shall be dealing with venues, agendas, communications, perhaps a website... we shall wait and see, but I'm looking forward to a new challenge and working with the new chair, Justine. Viva Espana - Early December 2003We spent last week in the sunny Costa Blanca and had a fantastic time lapping up some sunshine, beer, sangria, copious nibbles, beautiful villages set into mountainsides and going on a boat with a glass bottom to look at the local sealife. Photos and a bit more about it coming soon... November 2003Yet more PVC and guns - 12 November 2003If I haven't mentioned it already, Matrix Revolutions is fantastic. It rocks as much as something that rocks quite a lot. Bring back Neo for another 3 films :-) Remembering friends - Remembrance Sunday weekend Had a great night in Wetherspoons on Saturday meeting up with Kate, Ian, Jen and Iain for the first time in quite a few months... much chat & beer ensued and a big thank you to Jenny for the belated birthday present :-) OoOOOoOOOH!! aAaAAAAAAaaaah! - Bonfire Night 2003Tonight we joined many thousands of other people in a very dramatic torch-lit procession up the high street, along closed roads through to Stoke Park where we were met by a funfair and blazing beacon. The firework display was pretty fantastic and I took enough photos to obliterate one of those throwaway cameras. Getting them developed whilst I'm at work so more later... Smiley wedding days - 1 November 2003Today we trained over to Frimley to watch Allison and Tony get married in a lovely church with long balconies and pretty windows. We sat at the back like naughty school children and I was thankful for hymns I knew from way back at school. October 2003Big fans and ceiling fans - 29th October 2003Went to the Arts Cafe in Aldgate East to see Alan Sparhawk from Low play his first UK solo gig. Support was from Her Space Holiday who used lots of string samples and beats and to me sounded like they ought to start singing "Brimful of Asha" at any minute. Their site mentions 'delicate songs of love, loss, hope and despair' but I must have blinked and missed these as I thought they carried off optimistic summery laid back dance quite well. I suppose the sampled voices talking about death might be a bit of a downer. Cars, baking and sunsets - Late October 03Well, it seems that the 'new' car is immobile at the moment, having rapidly developed a fscked automatic gearbox, so I'm in talks to get it sorted out without it costing the earth. That wouldn't be right considering how quickly it broke! Anyway, had a skint and lazy weekend in, learning to make lovely fresh white bread, Delia style, and a microwaved cake. It wasn't the nicest ever, but not bad for about 10 minutes effort. Watched a few videos, drank some rather strong fortified wine and enjoyed the pretty sunset. Clicking this sentence will let you have a look at the pretty sunset too. A weekend of trolls and witches - 17-18 October 2003A rather entertaining weekend starting with P & I watching Bill Bailey at the Wyndhams Theatre in the West End. FirstCall (linked so you know who to avoid) cocked up our seats, but rather than send us home, the theatre upgraded us to the front row of the Royal Circle rather than the gods seats I'd managed to book. We partook of some nice pub lunch on Saturday then went to see a stage adaptation of Terry Pratchett's Maskerade which was very funny, despite my fears at first that the company had absolutely no scenery. There was even a firework involved which made the theatre nice and smelly. All trolled out now :-) Ummmmmmmmmmmm, Grrreat! Waffle Waffle, High Pants, Cello Harmonics - 13th October 2003Tonight I had the dubious pleasure of attending the Guildford Institute of the University of Surrey Patron's Evening. I ambled in at 6:31, expecting it to be one of those informal 'mingling-over-a-buffet' evenings, only to find people sitting in rows about to be addressed by the Mayor of Guildford. Needless to say, I sat down quickly. Little People, Little Fish - Mid October 2003Apart from doing some tedious OU reading this weekend, I also met some Very Important Little People for the first time. We ate biscuits and played with an anglepoise lamp and the piano, then P and I visited the King's Head due to the awful television programming this Autumn. On Sunday, apart from doing a little more work, I watched as many boxes of old belongings were sifted through. Makes me want to drive to Wales and load up the car on reminiscence and toys. Finally watched the films taken over the Summer, then spent a smiley afternoon watching 'Finding Nemo' which was very cute and amusing, and would have been even better if the children could just stop talking all the way through it ;-) Hum ho, back to the office today but at least the focus groups are over. How I long to sit at a desk and do something intelligent rather than wander the cold streets of quiet towns asking people if they would care to do something they're not particularly interested in. Ladies night in alpine style - Early October 2003This weekend was my ex-colleague Allison's hen do, so off I trotted (or trained, taxied and lifted) to her flat for some wine, wine and more wine, then on to the Brasserie at the Kellar in Bracknell. A big buffet, lots of beer, singing whilst standing on our chairs, brassy soul band, a few silly signs and blown up condoms later we were moving on to club Apres next door. Danced for a bit then succumbed to the lure of the bar once more. Had a fab time and despite the fact I have a stonking hangover, I must count myself lucky that Alli had the clarity of thought to make me eat a fried egg sarnie last night before I passed out on her dining room chair, and later her sofa. ZzZzZZz. Bring on the wedding! September 2003Bang, bang, bang, flamethrowing violin cases!! - Late September 2003Went up to London shopping on Saturday and once again remembered how much I hate the crowds of people ambling slowly, seemingly determined to get in my way as much as they can. Didn't even buy anything, hum ho. Went to see 'Once upon a time in Mexico' though, which was a fab shoot-em-up type saga with inventive weapons such as guns disguised as guitars, flamethrowers built into instrument cases and what looked like a bomb in a guitar-case-on-wheels for rolling under vans and making loud bangs. Whoomph! Made yummy fruity crumble too. It must be Autumn. A jaunty folksie night out - 25 September 2003For the second time this year P and I ventured to the Electric Theatre to see some good old folksie music. Tonight was the turn of Eliza Carthy (without any of the Waterson Carthy brigade) plus three young men playing a variety of violins, violas, guitars and melodians (melodia? who knows!) playing sunny GU as the first night of their new tour. Yet again I marvelled at her fantastic voice, chunky shit-kicking boots and her infallible ability to play the violin halfway down her arm whilst singing a different melody. I know I'd be lost after the third note. That is, if I could actually sing in the first place. I'm very jealous of multi-tasking musicians ;-) A Renewed Interest in Black PVC -20th September 2003Watched Underworld this weekend and marvelled at the fab costumes which were rather Crow/Blade/Matrixy. Lots of black PVC, corsets, fangs, werewolves, darkness, rain, stained glass, crucifixes - see the gallery here. Also picked up a rather amusing little book at the local charity book shop - take a look at this. Current face size = yellow and medium on the left, pink and normal on the right. It's getting better slowly. Ouch - Mid September 2003Am sitting at home in pain due to a lovely dental operation at the hospital yesterday. I was priveleged enough to have my wisdom tooth cut in two, then my gum sliced, then the whole lot pulled out, leaving me looking a little cabbagepatchkidesque. Am hoping it stops hurting soon because I can't open my mouth or eat anything too solid. Sloppy pasta, jelly and mashed bananas aren't the best combination! Happy Birthday to Meeee! - Birthdaytyme 2003So that's it. I'm officially old now! Spent a relaxing weekend enjoying the heritage open days and noseying around Holy Trinity, including a wander up the spiral stairs of the bell tower, a quick squizz inside the Guildhall and its balcony, then on to the medieval undercroft. Went for a big walk up a whopping hill on Sunday then later for a celebratory meal at Zizzi followed by a trip to the Star. I was a bit grumpy, but I'm sorry. The Great Gates of Cellodom - 11 September 2003We spent a very nice evening up in London, starting off at the Circle Bar at the Royal Albert Hall then moving into the arena (in some dizzyingly high seats, may I add) to watch the Zurich-based Tondhalle Orchestra, conducted by David Zinman at the 71st Prom of the year. We were treated to a little Don Juan by Richard Strauss, then out came the rather brilliant Yo-Yo Ma with his cello. A rousing performance of the Elgar Cello Concerto, in my mind one of the most beautiful things written, ensued, spoiled only by a stray mobile phone during the slow quiet movement. We were even treated to a bit of solo Bach as an encore. The concert concluded with Ravel's orchestration of Mussorgsky's Pictures in an Exhibition which was fantastic, with bells and gongs in all the right places. The orchestra also gave us an encore which I hope was one of the marches from Pomp and Circumstance or I'll look rather silly. After a little train journey I was treated to the Onslow Spice's finest Korahi chicken, some beer and a much much needed snooze. Bring on the weekend. I'm shattered! Chortle chortle - 9 September 2003It's been a busy week already! P's Mum graced us with her presence on Saturday and we enjoyed a pretty amble around the town and watched canal boats passing by. A yummy pub lunch was enjoyed by all and we returned home most dozy. Ashes to ashes, rust to dust - 4 September 2003Today Mabel has been wished well on her way to a better place up in the sky with the other delapidated pieces of machinery which currently reside in autoheaven. Have a look at the very large sad photo of her here, and look up in the sky tonight. There will be a new star in heaven, and I'll bet it will be rust-coloured. A sad, sad day... with it's rather good pointsEarly September 2003I have had some rather disastrous car moments recently, including complete non-functionality of 'Mabel' in the middle of Park Barn, non-functionality of 'Mabel' in the road opposite my house and most spectacularly, utter engine failure when my Dad came over to try and fix her. Her valves, cylinders, plugs and very being seems to have undergone an enginiac arrest. Alas, my trusty companion of almost two years shall be meeting the great scrapheap God in the sky in the very near future. August 2003Check out my ring- Late August 2003After another lovely trip to Reading I am now the very proud owner of a lovely ring, which is photographed here. To celebrate, and because we had some bacon, we cooked up a sooper! carbonara then ventured into town for a drinkle at the King's Head. Shiny Happy People - Late Aug Bank Holiday 2003This weekend we visited Reading and I was bought a very beautiful shiny thing (yes, I'll post a pic in due course) which made me smile immensely. After a drinkie in the Pitcher and Piano we retired home for cookery, wine and Possession on DVD. It's very good, despite what some of the reviewers said. Techno Techno Techno Techno! - 16-17 August 2003This weekend I treated myself to some new electronic gadgets - an all-singing-all-dancing-all-texting-all-musical phone and a DVD player with enough speakers to fill the lounge. Needless to say, I've been mostly listening to music and watching films all weekend, enjoying the new aural pleasures such equipment can provide. Greatly enjoyed the time-travelling headfsck that is Donnie Darko and the even stranger Orlando about a 400 year old shemale. Virgina Woolf must have been strange. Leaving one and on to another - 14 August '03Well, I've gone and done it. Yesterday was my last day at Surrey CA and I'm now a fully fledged Community Learning Adviser, apparently. To mark my last day I was treated to a nice lunch at the local Harvester which was obviously a better choice than going to this one. Returned to work very very stuffed (when will I learn to stop having a salad starter before a large salad lunch?) and was presented with some pretty flowers, cards and gift tokens - thank you!!! Beavered away all afternoon to get the last of my work done, then cleared my desk and skipped on my merry way. To celebrate in the evening we went on a country drive to explore my new patch, and found ourselves in Puttenham and I was treated to dinner which was to my great delight chip-free and cooked just how I wanted it. Hurrah. So, onwards and upwards to the new challenges that await me... Leaving Work.. hee hee, ha ha - Mid August 2003In six minutes time it will officially be my last day in my current job. To celebrate and/or commiserate I was taken for a fantastic Italian meal at Carlo's Trattoria last night by colleagues David and Anne. The food was fantastic, the wine lovely and a good old chat was had by all. Alas, wasps again harassed me during earlier drinks in Gomshall, and David's meal was plagued by a visiting spider determined to make its presence known. So, tomorrow is my leaving lunch with colleagues at the local pub, then I'm a free woman! Rural Pootles and Sunny Birthdays - Early August 2003Another busy week, ending in a few good nights out. We drove out to Friday Street one night and found a small village and beautiful pond/lake hidden amongst winding roads and tall trees. One site I read about the place said "You turn the corner and suddenly you are in Switzerland", which is amusingly true in a sense. The village pub, The Stephan Langton, provided us with fine ale and interesting smells wafted over from the restaurant once we moved inside. Yes, I still run away from wasps. Trip to the Folk of Nor & Suff - Early August 2003Spent a mostly sunny long weekend over in Norwich & Suffolk meeting people who will one day be lucky(?!) enough to be vaguely related to me. Enjoyed some very pretty scenery, a breezy but warm walk along Southwold seafront & pier, a ride on a chain-ferry and some lovely wine. BackJuly 2003Missing... Missing... - End July 2003After a quiet weekend of shopping, DIYing and reading, L and Friends ventured to the Royal Albert Hall (RAH!) for some Promlike culture. Assuming the plebian sore-legged arena posture, we enjoyed Haydn's Symphony no.44 in E minor, 'Trauer', Bartók Piano Concerto no. 3, Copland's Quiet City and the European premiere of John Adams' 'On the Transmigration of Souls'. The composer himself conducted the whole affair but having heard his piece - a combination of backing tape full of lost people's names and a huge choir singing "we love you, we miss you" - I think he's rather strange. I also think I missed the point, reading after the event that the names were all 9/11 victims. Makes sense now. Perhaps I shouldn't always scrimp on buying programmes. Ambient Wedded Picnique in a Parental French Style -Later July 2003Another fine sociable weekend, starting (after yet more dental trauma at the Royal Surrey) with a BBQ at P's colleague's house. Fantastic pizza was munched by all and Miss A feels confident that she too will soon cook such fine delicacies. Saturday was Sonia's wedding day so we went to the church in Weybridge and later on to the reception at a very pretty hotel. Prior thoughts about avoiding church weddings were certainly reinforced by the inability to listen to anything the vicar said without wanting to cry! Anyway, all the best to you Sonia and Rob - it was a lovely day. Saturday also saw the introduction of a shiny microwave to our mansion and a visit to the Hogshead in a precarious top. And on to Sunday, where we offered ourselves up once more to act as stewards in shiny tabbards, yet again enjoying the faux-power of wandering aimlessly with a radio, but alas spanner this time. Shalford's Ambient Picnic was blessed with glorious weather, tasty falafel, interesting stalls and a kind lady who gave me cat postcards. Greenpeace covered me in stickers and in true wise form I happily accepted sweeties from strangers. Later on, I graciously accepted a meal from some other not-so-strange people who share my surname. Les Parents, mon amour et moi went to a very nice French restaurant in Central London to celebrate many things, and mainly just because we could. Tres bien french onion soup, rivalled only by that eaten in Paris with Les Vaches in 2001. So, back into the weekday routine now and don't I just wish I could have another two days off just to sleep!?! More birthdays, fantastic dinners and fab news - Mid July '03First and foremost, a huge happy birthday to my lovely Mum who's probably winging her way around our Capital dragging Dad around shoe shops or museums as we speak. Have a great day and see you Sunday :-x Secondly a big thank you to P who took me to the scrumptious Olivo's to celebrate the range of exciting and good news we've had recently. Which brings me on to the fact that I've got a new job and will be moving onwards and upwards in Mid August to expand the Empire ;-) New email address and phone numbers in due course for those who need it. Guilfest 2003 & another Happy Birthday!! - 4-6 July 2003Spent the weekend stewarding in very high visibility gear (you couldn't miss me in _that_ yellow - the insects seemed to love it) at Guilfest 2003. Glastonbury's deformed nephew. Whilst not guarding fire exits or directing cars I greatly enjoyed a set by Tom McRae and looked on amusedly as Daniel Bedingfield strutted his stuff. The weekend was not complete without a rousing performance from Drunk in Public (aka 3/4 of the Levellers) who treated us to their crusty classics of the early-mid 90's. Also this weekend was Jenny's birthday so a big yaaaaaay! to you Jen, and Sonia - hope your hen night wasn't too messy! Ooh, and Kyle - happy birthday too!! BackJune 2003Glastonbury 2003 - 27-30 June 2003Perhaps I am just lucky, but this year's Glasto was beautifully sunny, relaxed, fun and not in the slightest bit muddy. L was greatly entertained by the wonderful Sigur Ros, Tom McRae and Mogwai and laughed muchly at Bill Bailey, Jack Russell, Murray Lachlan Young et al. Beer, wonderful company, sunshine, music, comedy and smiles are good. Tents on hills? Maybe not. Smiles and miles of queues - 22 June 2003Worked up the guts to drive somewhere that isn't on my local map for local people and ended up buying furnishings in Ikea and getting grumpy at the queues and the fact that I couldn't seem to assemble the simplest piece of flat-pack without headbutting something. Later on something fantastic happened, but more about that another day. Haaaappy Birthday To Yah! - Late June 2003Spent a sunny day celebrating P's birthday in the best possible way - shopping, a movie, presents, some beer then a lovely evening at the Cafe de Paris which left me feeling very full and happy, although not so full that I couldn't sample some of the cake I'd made. Yum. Now I know how to make cake, no-one will stop me. Muahahahahahah! On the Move...- 7 June 2003Today was a rather good day in that P and I obtained magic keys to our new abode which is a pretty wooden-floored place with fireplaces, a little courtyard garden and a spooky cellar. Thanks to much parental help and sofa-carrying we are now moved in completely, although not completely tidy ;-) Mabel is enjoying being driven by someone less cr*p than me and although she's currently coughing and spluttering I'm sure she appreciates the attention. Also, a little hello and good luck to Susie who jetted off for jaunts around the world today. You mad girl! BackMay 2003Weekend...reloaded - late May '03Spent a lobster-coloured sunburned weekend watching the new Matrix film (yes, it's fantastic, but I'm sure you all knew I'd say that) and enjoying the beer garden at the Seahorse. Buried myself in boxes packing for my imminent move... watch out for those change of address cards and mails arriving soon Yet more new houses and another Sunny Weekend - Late May Bank Holiday 2003Several days off work and a long long walk later, Miss A and Mr P are crossing their fingers and hoping to become the proud owners (okay, tenants) of a veritable mansion with dungeon and loft. All good luck willingly accepted. Other bank holiday fun included Kate's Eurovision Party - weren't we chronic?! Nil Points!?! - lovely to see everyone again and apologies for leaving early. New Houses All Round - Mid May 2003Accompanied P to a party at his colleagues very nice new house and finally put faces to names then enjoyed a bouncy trip home on the back of a night bus whilst making random drunken noises, I'd expect. Tis also the time for me to be looking for a new place here, so I'm keeping the local paper in business and wearing out certain websites. Fingers crossed, there will be a suitably imposing tower or mansion waiting for us somewhere (yes, probably over the rainbow with the cuckoos). Rule Brittania! - 9-11th May 2003Another fab weekend. *big grin*. Went to see 'I Capture the Castle' which was a very enjoyable film based on the Dodie Smith book and provoked smiles and a little tear or two from Miss A. Later a walk around sunny (later, very rainy) Godalming lead to a scrumptious Sunday lunch, then on to a 'Last Night of the Proms' concert where balloons were waved and popped to the strains of Bax, Elgar, Handel, Parry, Walton and Vaughan Willams. Miss A left with renewed incentive to learn the s*dding alto clef and raise the viola from the dead. Sunny Busy Bang Golly Day Weekend - Early May 03Lots of fun and frolics this weekend, starting with a scrumptious meal with colleagues to wish Paula well on her travels to far off places. Next up came a few drinkies with P, Paula, Vicky and Sarah although courtesy of a late license, lots of people and big speakers it was rather hard to hear anything other than bangin choons and the clinking of glasses. On Saturday P took me out for lunch and on to a rather good concert by Waterson Carthy, I quote "with 100 years at the forefront of the folk revival between them, no wonder Martin Carthy, Norma Waterson and Eliza Carthy have been dubbed "the first family of English traditional music". Tim Van Eyken provided some mallardly vocals and a variety of accordian-type things and Miss A took back some of her previous negative words about folk music. Not a northern accent to be found. Eliza Carthy, apart from having a fantastic voice and playing violin better than me, also had rather fab boots. Give me six months and I'll be a shit kicking folk-stomping gothic-looking musical maiden too ;-) April 2003Where there's a will...26th Apr '03...there's a river Wey where pretty wanderings led to the discovery of a strange world of sand and bunnies, a large hill full of mystery, moocows and mud. Three Pigeons later featured, as did a Red Dragon. Anti-Easter Amblings -Easter Weekend '03Wandered around the many sidestreets and hills of our lovely town amidst gusty blustery weather. Partook of fine ale at The Star, along with much nibble-food courtesy of P, indulged further at Old Orleans then watched Johnny English which was amusing if not _quite_ up my street. In true devout style, a grim curry was cooked to celebrate Easter, although later Miss A succumbed to the lure of Mini Eggs. Not as interesting perhaps as watching Amanda Holden dribble her soup, but a lovely weekend for me. L launches computer centre at last - 16th Apr 2003Today was spent frantically running around with USB cables, then breathing a large *phew* when the launch of our community computer centre in Caterham came off very well. Here's to a successful year's provision! Life's just a walk in the park - 13th April 2003Spent a lazy Sunday wandering around some of the prettier areas our town has to offer, ending up in an old haunt for exceptional (though not quite as vegtastic as previously experienced) burgers and beer... and after a long walk, what's better than relaxing on the sofa. Happy Birthday Wishes - Early April 2003L wishes a Haaaaaaappy Birthday to Claire, her fellow Fitzjohnian housemate of old and fellow continental-travelling vache qui rit. Have a fab day!!
